Dark Island FAQ's

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an alternative to conventional braces. Instead of moving teeth with braces and wires, Invisalign allow us to move teeth with clear aligners. Invisalign are designed to gradually move teeth using series of aligners that were fabricated to customize your needs.

Invisalign has its own benefits since they do not require brackets and wires:

  • Clear aligners minimize cosmetic impact during treatment
  • Less Oral Hygiene concern
  • Shorter Appointment time
  • Less/ No emergency appointment from wire poking and appliance breakage
  • Less concern when playing Sports or Musical Instruments
  • Eat whatever you would like.

However, Invisalign is not for everyone, since some complicated teeth movement requires conventional brackets. Invisalign also requires excellent compliance in terms of aligner wear to make it effective.

How many hours should I wear my aligners?

20-22 hours of daily wear is required. Please take them off when you eat or drink, but don’t forget to put them back on. You can take them out during contact sports, if mouthguard is required.

Make sure you remove them when you drink, since leaving them in when you drink can retain sweet causing caries.

How can I clean them?

Brush it with natural toothpaste that does not have abrasive component (non-whitening toothpaste etc.)

How often should I come to the clinic?

Every 8-10 weeks you would be required to come to the clinic to check on the progress and tracking

How often should I change my aligners?

Every one-two weeks, depending on the case.

What is the treatment time?

Treatment time will be similar to conventional braces. However, some cases we may be able to finish the case sooner since you will be able to wear the rubber bands sooner.

What is the difference between Invisalign Teen and Invisalign?

Invisalign teen has a color indicator that allows us to check whether you are wearing the aligner for a sufficient amount of time. The color change will help you know whether you wore the aligner for sufficient amount of time. In addition, Invisalign teen provides six replacement aligners with no additional charge just in case you lose your aligners.

What happens if I lose my aligner?

Please wear the previous or the next aligner and give us a call so we can schedule you for office visit to check the progress.

Will there be any discomfort?

Yes, there may be some discomfort 2-3 days since your teeth are expected to move with your new aligners.

Will my speech be impeded?

As with conventional braces, your speech may be affected with mild lisp temporarily. Sometimes there is a ledge on the aligner (on the back of your upper front teeth) that may interfere initially, but you will get used to them as you speak with the aligners more.

Is it completely invisible?

The aligners are clear so visibility is minimized. However, there will be attachments placed (transparent buttons) on some teeth that will enable us to do some difficult movements with aligners only.

What problems can crooked or misaligned teeth cause?

Watch this short clip and find out how Invisalign can help you achieve healthy smile.

Why straight teeth make you healthier?

1. Gives you healthier gums – When teeth are too widely spaced or crowded, they often become inflamed and red. These characteristics not only look bad, they’re a sign of periodontal disease.

Straightening your teeth helps the gums fit more securely around the teeth, creating the strongest defense against periodontal problems.

2. Makes teeth easier to clean – Crowded teeth are much more difficult to floss, which can lead to plaque buildup and eventually tooth decay. The inability to remove all the food caught in the brackets and wires of metal braces can also lead to a similar outcome.

3. Prevents abnormal tooth wear – Crowded bottom teeth often cause one or more teeth to jut out, which rub against the upper teeth. Over time, this leads to an inefficient chewing function and can cause undue wear to tooth enamel.

4. Decreases your risk of tooth injury – Crowded, protruding upper teeth are more likely to be broken in the event of an accident.

5. Decreases headaches or neck pain – Crooked teeth place excessive stress on the gums and the bone that supports the teeth. This can also be a sign of a jaw misalignment, which can lead to chronic headaches as well as face or neck pain.

6. Improves self-esteem and happiness – An important component of your overall health is your mental health. Numerous studies have shown that having a better looking smile increases the amount you smile, which in turn leads to various health benefits, including lower stress and improved cognition.

7. Improves overall health – The tooth decay and gum disease associated with crooked teeth are caused by decay. Left untreated, this bacteria can lead to mouth sores, bleeding gums and possible tooth loss.

How Invisalign works? How is the process?

The Invisalign process uses a series of clear plastic aligners to gradually and gently shift your teeth into the correct position. This treatment takes approximately a year for adults, and for teens about the same amount of time as treatment with braces. Without wires and brackets obstructing your view of your teeth, you can see the positive changes as they occur!
Precise treatment planning

In addition to external photos and digital X-rays, your Invisalign Expert in SPINEL DENTAL will mention you if you are eligible for clear brace or not, if your teeth structure is eligible for invisalign then takes impressions of your teeth.
Custom aligners based on your treatment plan

Invisalign creates a series of custom-made, clear aligners following the treatment plan. These aligners are made of a smooth, BPA-free plastic that won’t irritate your gums like traditional metal braces often do.

It’s recommended to wear the aligners for 20-22 hours in a day. You can remove the aligners to eat and to brush and floss your teeth.
Gradually straightening your teeth

You’ll switch your aligners about every two weeks, with each new set advancing you to the next stage of the treatment. Your Dentist in SPINEL DENTAL likes to see you every four to six weeks so that he can keep an eye on your progress.
Invisalign Express

Invisalign Express offers a convenient, affordable, fast and effective way to straighten minor cases of crooked teeth in three months or less. This accelerated process uses five sets of aligner trays that are replaced approximately every two weeks and gradually shift the teeth in the same manner as the longer process.
Invisalign for Teens

Teen years are filled with important events such as graduations, proms and first dates – all of which are well documented. And who doesn’t snap and share a selfie once in a while? Teens can have their teeth straightened effectively with Invisalign Teen® clear, removable aligner trays once their adult teeth have erupted.

Invisalign Teen offers the same benefits as adult treatment, with a few added bonuses. Compliance tracking is built into the trays so that you, your teen and your dentist can check how often the trays are being worn. Six replacement trays are provided free of charge with Invisalign Teen, and like the adult treatment, Invisalign Teen aligner trays can be removed to eat, brush and floss.

What conditions Invisalign can correct?

Invisalign treatment can fix a wide variety of problems with teeth and bite alignment. Mild cases of crooked teeth as well as much more difficult problems involving serious bite issues can be corrected with the clear plastic aligner trays.

Following are some of the main conditions SPINE DENTAL can correct with Invisalign.

  • Overly crowded
Overly Crowded teeth can be difficult to clean the teeth properly. Lack of proper oral care can promote tooth decay and cause a higher risk of gum disease.
  • Overbite
An overbite can cause excessive wear on the lower teeth, gum irritations and can also cause jaw problems.
  • Underbite
This occurs when the bottom teeth protrude beyond the upper teeth and can interfere with the normal function of front teeth and molars, and can lead to jaw problems.
  • Gaps in Teeth, Spaced Teeth
Gaps can cause teeth to shift into the empty spaces and become loose because the dental arch is not as secure. Food and bacteria are easily trapped in gaps and increase the risk for tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Open Bite
An open bite can interfere with chewing and can cause speech impairment and jaw problems.
  • Crossbite
This is a symptom of jaw misalignment, which can cause worn-down teeth, gum disease or both.

What is the lifestyle differences with Invisalign vs. traditional braces for teens?

COSTS
At SPINEL DENTAL, we know that the cost of orthodontics is relatively the same, whether your teen gets braces or Invisalign. We can give you a full breakdown and discuss payment options when you come in for a consultation.
TIME
If school attendance is important for your teen, then Invisalign Teen® is their best option. They will miss fewer days from school for dental appointments because we only need to see them once every four to six weeks. With traditional braces, some patients need to come in every two to four weeks.
AESTHETICS
When it comes to appearance, nothing beats Invisalign. Keep this in mind when comparing Invisalign vs. traditional braces for teens. The aligners are clear, so hardly anyone will notice that they are wearing them. The biggest aesthetic benefit is that, as their teeth begin to move, their smile will look better. Being able to see an improvement will quickly help your teen to feel encouraged to keep up with the process, knowing that their smile will only get more and more attractive.
EATING
One of the biggest concerns we hear from teens (especially the hungry ones) is that wearing braces will impact their daily diet. We know that most of our younger patients are fairly particular in what they eat and at the very least, have multiple favorite foods. If things like pizza, hamburgers, sandwiches and popcorn are on their “must have” list, then Invisalign is a far better option than braces. When wearing traditional metal braces, teens have to eat carefully. You cannot simply bite into a burger or sandwich and if you do, you will have a ton of food stuck in between your teeth. For teens, and adults, this can be completely embarrassing. Many teens change what they eat while wearing braces, while others simply don’t eat in public. Both can be inconvenient and silly when Invisalign provides a better solution. Since the Invisalign® aligners are designed to come out while eating, your teen can eat whatever they want without worrying about how they look or their braces getting damaged. This means that life can continue on like normal, without the annoying adjustments that teens don’t enjoy.

ORAL HYGIENE
Another factor to compare when evaluating Invisalign vs. traditional braces for teens is oral hygiene. This is a big deal because, as a dentist, we do not want any of our patients to suffer from decay and as a parent, you do not want your child to end up with a bunch of cavities. At SPINEL DENTAL, our solution is to provide teens with Invisalign instead of braces. When wearing braces, the risk for decay naturally goes up because it is harder to keep the teeth clean. With Invisalign, the aligners come out while brushing so their oral hygiene routine can remain virtually the same. The only slight difference is that the aligners need to be brushed with warm water and a soft toothbrush before being put back in. We can also recommend a special cleaning solution but otherwise, the process is the same as always and completely easy. If your teen gets braces instead, they will need to use a special flossing tool and a brush that looks like a tree to get the food particles and plaque off of the area around the brackets. This has to be repeated for every tooth so you can imagine how much longer it will take.
SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
Don’t forget school activities when comparing Invisalign vs. traditional braces for teens. We have found that the majority of our patients do more than simply go to school. They are in the band, choir, play sports, act in the school play, etc. In other words – they are busy. Braces can interfere with this because they can be uncomfortable and make it difficult to play an instrument. They can also create a hazard when playing high-impact sports. Fortunately, Invisalign does not. The aligners can be removed during any of these activities so that your teen does not have to sacrifice anything to straighten their teeth. They will be far happier with the process as a result.
POST TREATMENT
Once your teen is done wearing Invisalign or traditional braces they will need to wear a retainer. It is normal and few, if any, can escape this reality. The reason is simple. Teeth can revert back to their old position, if only slightly. Wearing a retainer at night, can help to keep the teeth in the correct and improved position. The good news is that your teen will be so used to wearing their aligners, a retainer will not seem like a big deal. In SPINEL DENTAL CLINIC, we can explain the various options for retainers but typically recommend a clear, full retainer that closely resembles the aligners they are accustomed to.
